I was recently invited to be a guest on The View as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. Before I forged a life for myself in the mountains I was actually a 5th grade teacher at Phoenix Country Day School in Arizona. I loved teaching and even met my wife, Ellie, who taught 7th grade, during my time there.
As a teacher you remember certain students vividly. For me one of those students happened to be Megan McCain. Ellie and I both had her in our classes during our time at Phoenix Country Day and when we’d see her grown up on TV and in the public eye, we would reminisce about how conscientious and kind she was as a young kid.
Her father, Senator John McCain, also stands out in my memories from those years. Along with a few other parents he advocated for the school to hire me as a teacher, despite reservations from the administration on whether me being blind would be too much of a barrier. The McCain family has always represented that spirit of No Barriers that I have built my life around. In the face of adversity both Megan and John McCain have proven to be strong, resilient, and to repeatedly stand up for what they value.
It was an honor to be invited to The View to surprise Megan.
